Catching horses before sunrise is a real thing, killing rattle snakes with your rope honda happens regularly. Broken fences by fighting bulls, yearlings where they don't belong. Run back calves, and angry Momma cows who'd run you up a tree. Starting colts, opening gates, doctoring replacement heifers, and pulling backward calves. Earflaps down on cold windy spring mornings, and wearing extra layers to keep your insides warm.
Trotting out as the sun comes up over the ridge, pairs that trail just like they should, and good lead cows who know where the gates are. Horseback conversations with your buddies, and the smell of summer sage.
On this day I raise a toast to all the Cowboys, cowkids, ranch wife's, and the up and comers who chose this life because it brings them joy.
Happy National Day of the American Cowboy.
